Shell investigates smoke near major Nigeria oil facility

STORY: Smoke filled the air near a major Shell oil and gas facility in Nigeria on Tuesday, May 14.

A spokesperson for the energy giant said an investigation was underway.

This came after residents near the Gbaran Ubie settlement in Bayelsa State reported hearing explosions and seeing smoke.

“I heard the sound (imitating the sound of the explosion).”

Farmer Ovie Ogbuku said Shell entered the area with firefighters.

A fire was reported by residents of the nearby community, who said explosions were heard where pipeline repair work was underway.

The Gbaran facility began operations in 2010 and processes nearly two billion cubic feet of gas per day.

The spokesperson for Shell – which is currently withdrawing from its onshore assets in Nigeria – said the incident would not immediately lead to an operational shutdown.

Shell did not immediately respond to reports from area residents.
