An entrepreneur has created a company that makes purring tortures – and aims for stressed millennials and the Zers generation.
Katharine Burke was exhausted while working in technology. A particularly bad day, she returned to her cat, Wren, and whatever she wanted was a hug.
Wren, being a cat, operates in his own words and was not in an affectionate mood at that time.
“I said to myself that it would be good if I could find a small bottle of hot water to take her place when she was not a cooperative,” Burke told Business Insider. “I went online because I was just going to buy it. I was really surprised when I couldn’t find what I was looking for.”
Burke decided to start making stuffed animals itself and creating a company called Purryfuls, and left his work a few months later to focus on the project.
They were launched at Toy Fair New York last weekend.

The stuffed animals are hot
There has been a boom to lint sales in adults in recent years.
The stuffed animals are “hot at the moment”, Brian Benway, senior tech and gaming analyst at Mintl, previously told Bi. In the traditional Toys and Games report by Mintel, published in October 2024, Benway said that the stuffed animals were particularly requested, sales increasing considerably.
Some attribute the popularity of millennials that cling to their youth, but others think that it is because there is less judgment on alternative interests and hobbies.
Burke said she was not aware of this when Purryfuls launch, but it is the age group she targets. It is not surprised that General Zers and the generation Y will turn to plush toys.
“I still remember my teddy bear-it was the first comforting device I had,” she said. “My key mission here was just to do something that would bring someone to someone’s day.”
Burke realized that a large part of the things that insisted it on stress – fights with insurance companies, DMV invoices, unexpected expenses from pipes that are fuishing – would probably be emphasized.
“It’s supposed to be a little moment of calm, a little moment of joy in your day, so that you can take a break,” said Burke.
The idea is not to replace real pets but to be there when you need their comfort, and they have better things to do.
There are several different parameters, including a sleep mode, in which the Purry purrs quietly for 10 minutes to help you derive.
Ride healing
It is believed that the purring heal for cats and a sign of happiness.
In the “Maddaddam” trilogy of Margaret Atwood, an idealistic and genetically sparse humanoid species co -opted the cat’s purring to cure physical injuries. It may not only be science fiction, however, because university research suggests that purring could also be good for us.
An article published in the Human-Animal Interaction Bulletin Journal in 2023 presented a small study of 65 respondents of different ages, who all had pet cats for variable times. The owners of cats reported that the purrs of their cats had a relaxing and calming effect.
The authors noted that the function of the purring of a cat is not fully understood, but previous research has revealed that mechanical vibrations have proven to promote self-healing in humans.
In another study that examined the impact of a pet cat on mental well-being during the pandemic, the owners described the purring of their Moggy as a grounding and comforting.
The millennials and zooks were both described as “anxious” generations, and Burke wants Purryfuls to be there to help if that can.
“I don’t know I mean things are more difficult for a generation on another-they are probably just different,” she said.
“But I think that now what we get is that people say, no, I’m not going to follow the path you have prescribed me. I’m going to make my choices for me according to what I like and what seems right to me,” added Burke. “It’s something I can really identify with – and that’s exactly what I did.”
