Sharon football player moves from Mass General to rehab

Sports News

Sharon football player Rohan Shukla has transitioned from Mass General Hospital to rehab after a 35-day stay with a traumatic brain injury, according to the GoFundMe page set up for him by teammate Sam Letendre.

According to a Friday update from Letendre, which he attributes to Shukla’s parents, the sophomore was moved to Neuro Rehab at Spaulding Boston Outpatient.

“Though Rohan is still in very early stages of regaining consciousness, it’s a significant milestone for him and we are hoping for better days for him here on,” the update reads.

Shukla, who plays safety, sustained a subdural hematoma during Sharon’s Thanksgiving Day game against Oliver Ames, which was called off late in the second quarter. He was first taken to Good Samaritan Hospital in Brockton before being moved to Mass General where, according to the GoFundMe page, he underwent surgery to control bleeding in his brain, but in mid-December remained in a coma.

“Our thoughts and prayers are going out to Rohan, his parents Abhishek and Deepika, and his twin brother Naman during this incredibly difficult time,” Sharon superintendent Peter J. Botelho and principal Kristen Keenan wrote in a Nov. 30 statement.

As of Friday evening, the GoFundMe has raised $77,433 on 940 donations toward its $100,000 goal.

“This is going to be a prolonged in-patient recovery for Rohan, please continue to support this campaign to provide him best chance at recovery and lead a quality life,” the latest update read.

Other community events have been organized, including a meal train, the wrestling team collecting cards, and an online 10-minute prayer service by the Indian American Association of Sharon.
