Police said the attacks took place around 11 a.m. local time along Beach Access 14, near the Wanna Wanna Beach Bar and Grill.

Based on witness accounts and images posted on social media, authorities believe a single shark about 6 feet long was responsible for the incident, Dowdy said.

A video posted on social media appeared to show a seriously injured person being pulled to shore after the attack. Blood could be seen in the water as panicked beachgoers burst into tears. Several passersby appeared to retrieve a belt to use as a tourniquet.

Law enforcement said they were patrolling the shoreline looking for sharks.
