Severe storms pose threat to Chicago area again Wednesday – NBC Chicago

After several rounds of thunderstorms hit the Chicago area, a risk of severe weather will exist again Wednesday.

According to the Storm Prediction Center, all of northern Illinois and northwest Indiana are at “marginal” risk of severe storms Wednesday, while southern portions of both states are at “increased” risk of severe storms .

SPC model guidance indicates that the primary threats from any developing storm would be gusty winds and hail, with the tornado threat existing primarily in the southern portions of Illinois and Indiana.

Heavy rain could also fall, affecting already saturated areas after downpours hit Chicago’s suburbs and city on Tuesday.

Storms are not expected to develop until late in the evening, with most of the day characterized by dry conditions, according to forecast models.

This serious threat follows a day full of storms in the Chicago area, with multiple episodes bringing heavy rain, hail and gusty winds to the area. Tornado warnings were also issued in McHenry and LaPorte counties, although no landfall was immediately reported.

A barn at Harvard was also destroyed, resulting in the deaths of several animals. National Weather Service crews will survey damage in the area to determine if a tornado occurred, although spotters have not reported any sightings in the area.

After Wednesday’s severe threat, temperatures are expected to fall back into the 60s across much of the region on Thursday, although values are expected to rebound into the 70s by Sunday, according to extended forecast models.
