Severe storms could hit Chicago area Sunday night – NBC Chicago

After previous rounds of showers and thunderstorms affected travel and caused delays to music festivals and sporting events, another round could occur Sunday afternoon and evening.

According to the Storm Prediction Center, parts of Cook, Will and Kankakee counties are at a “slight” risk of severe weather Sunday evening, as well as all of Northwest Indiana. Areas west of Interstate 57 are at “marginal” risk as storms begin to move through again Sunday afternoon.

The main threats from developing storms will be gusty winds and damaging hail, although brief tornadoes cannot be ruled out, according to forecast models.

As the sun helps warm areas hit by previous rains, areas farther east in the Chicago area will be at greater risk for severe storms, with that heat helping to fuel their development.

The timeline appears to extend from mid to late evening, with the National Weather Service saying storms could persist between 9 p.m. and 10 p.m.

Severe storms are also possible tomorrow, with scattered showers and thunderstorms expected in the afternoon. The Chicago area has a “marginal” risk of severe storms, with the main threats being gusty winds and heavy rain, according to the SPC.
