Severe storms could bring risk of large hail, tornadoes to Chicago area – NBC Chicago

Most of the Chicago area is at a “slight” risk of severe weather Tuesday and Wednesday morning, with various threats facing the area.

According to latest guidance from the Storm Prediction Center, Storm development will impact the type of threats that emerge.

One scenario would see the Chicago area at risk of “high winds,” which could cause power outages and damage to trees and even buildings, according to SPC alerts issued Monday evening.

Another could see equally dangerous threats in the form of “significant hail” or “significant tornadoes,” according to the SPC alert.

The timing of storms will help impact the threats posed, as will cloud cover ahead of the storm system and surface temperatures, according to SPC alerts.

Regardless of what threats emerge, multiple waves of storms are possible, with the main threat coming from storms that could develop late Tuesday afternoon and into the evening. Scattered showers and storms could impact the region Tuesday morning, but subsequent storms arriving during the evening commute and around 10-11 p.m. could generate the worst of the severe threats.

These storms are expected to primarily impact northern Illinois, according to the SPC.

A final round of showers and storms could hit the region Wednesday morning, with the greatest threat facing northwest Indiana.

Additional showers could develop Thursday, with high temperatures beginning to cool into the 60s.

After this rain leaves, highs will fall into the mid to low 50s for most of the weekend, according to forecast models.
