Seven dead, dozens injured in bus crash on Mississippi highway

Seven people, including at least two children, were killed and dozens injured when a bus overturned on a Mississippi highway shortly before 1 a.m. Saturday, authorities said.

The bus, which belonged to Autobuses Regiomontanos, was headed toward Mexico when it suffered a flat tire and veered off Interstate 20 before overturning near Vicksburg, CNN reports. reported.

No other vehicles were involved in the accident.

Two siblings, ages six and 16, were among the seven deaths, according to Warren County Coroner Doug Huskey.

The Mississippi Highway Patrol told the outlet that 37 other passengers had to be transported to hospitals with unspecified injuries.

Six of the deaths were reported at the scene and the seventh victim died at a hospital, highway patrol officials said.

They added that the bus involved was a 2018 Volvo.

“Any time people are injured or killed it’s tragic, but when you have a situation like this where there are multiple deaths and multiple injuries, it’s even worse,” Warren County Sheriff Martin Pace said. said WAPT.

A tow truck driver at the scene told the outlet that the bus rolled into a ditch and several passengers were ejected from the vehicle.

It is not clear where the trip originated, but it is known that the bus was heading to Mexico.

According to Mississippi Highway Patrol spokesman Kervin Stewart, “several Mexican identification documents” were found on the bus.

Husky confirmed told CBS News that the two children who died were from Guatemala and that the other passengers were also Guatemalan, although no names have been released.
