Archaeologists from the Vienna Museum in Austria said on Wednesday that the remains of around 150 soldiers had been discovered in a Roman mass of mass.
Construction work to renovate a football field in the residential and industrial blender area, discovered the skeletal remains in October.
Now, after an analysis of experts, it has been confirmed that the remains go back to the Roman Empire of the 1st century.
The remains of 129 people were confirmed for having been found on the site and other excavations led to the discovery of more bones, which led the experts to believe that the number of organizations exceeds 150.
The Vienna Museum said that the discovery of skeletal discoveries of this particular period is extremely rare due to the practice of cremation until the 3rd century AD.
“As the burials of cremation were common in the European parts of the Roman Empire around 100 AD, corporal burials were an absolute exception. The discoveries of Roman skeletons of this period are therefore extremely rare,” said Kristina Adler-Wölfl, chief of archeology of the city.
The museum said that buried people had aged between 20 and 30 and were exclusively men who seemed to have been killed in combat.
The injuries caused by swords, spears, daggers and projectile bolts were identified as the causes of death, leading the team of experts to determine that killed people were part of a military operation that ended with a disaster.
“In the context of Roman acts of war, there are no comparable discoveries of combatants,” said Michaela Binder, who led the archaeological excavation. “There are huge battlefields in Germany where weapons have been found. But find the dead, which is unique for the whole Roman history.”
The Vienna Museum said that new in -depth investigations would continue and that research was still in a very early phase.
