Series of severe storms will bring devastating winds and “torrential” rain – NBC Chicago

Parts of the Chicago area saw severe thunderstorm warnings overnight, and more rounds of strong to severe storms are expected to develop Tuesday, beginning with the morning commute.

“We are watching the potential for two sets of storms,” said NBC 5 meteorologist Alicia Roman. “First mid-morning, where we could see devastating wind gusts and torrential downpours. ‘afternoon, the serious risk persists.’

Early Tuesday, a storm moved through Kendall, Will, Kankakee and Grundy counties, although the rest of the Chicago area remained dry.

This was not the case for other parts of the region. Around 4 a.m. Tuesday, a line of thunderstorms was moving across northwest Illinois and across Madison, while another system moved across eastern Wisconsin and into Michigan.

One of those lines could cut off far northern Illinois counties early, and the other could push south, Roman said, as the NBC 5 Storm Team continued to monitor storm patterns. forecast.

The greatest risk of showers and storms in the Chicago area comes later Tuesday morning, Roman said, around 6 or 7 a.m., when a line of showers and storms is expected to move across DeKalb , Lake, McHenry and northern Cook Counties. Around 10 a.m., these storms are expected to move south, Roman said.

A second round of storms could reappear later Tuesday, Roman said, between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m., creating potentially dangerous conditions for afternoon and evening travel.

According to the Storm Prediction Center, northern counties were at “marginal” risk of severe weather Tuesday, which ranks as level one out of five on the SPC’s five-tier scale. The rest of the Chicago area was at a “marginal” risk of severe weather Tuesday. “Slight” risk of severe weather, classified as level two.

“Any storm that develops could produce heavy downpours and strong, destructive winds,” Roman said.

Tuesday will also be a hot and humid day with more muggy conditions, Roman said. Dew points in the 60s and 70s were expected, along with temperatures in the 80s and mid-90s.

“It’s already pretty muggy this morning,” Roman said.

According to Roman, heat index levels on Tuesday could reach the 90s.
