Sergio Perez involved in ‘monstrous’ crash on first lap of Monaco Grand Prix, with race halted after crash with Kevin Magnussen

Sergio Perez escaped unhurt after a huge crash during a wild first lap of the Monaco Grand Prix.

The Mexican, who started 16th, was hit by the Haas of Kevin Magnussen while climbing after the first corner, Sainte Dévote. The Dane’s left front caught Perez’s right rear, sending the latter into the barriers.

Perez then ricocheted off Nico Hulkenberg’s other Haas in a dramatic pinball action that brought out a red flag as debris was cleared.

Pérez’s Red Bull was virtually destroyed with only one wheel attached, although the monocoque protected the driver from physical damage.

All escaped without apparent injuries.

In a crazy start, the two Alpines tangled, sending Esteban Ocon into the air at the entrance to the tunnel. He landed safely and continued until the race was suspended.

Carlos Sainz, third at Ferrari, stopped on Place du Casino after appearing to sink too deep.

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc had led from pole with McLaren’s Oscar Piastri second before the stoppage.
