Some Senate Democrats are reportedly willing to confirm Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as the next Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS), according to a report.
THE Hill reported that multiple sources say Senators Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and John Fetterman (D-PA) are considering supporting Kennedy. The sources believe Democrats and Kennedy share concerns about how corporations heavily influence diet and how American food is currently processed.
This comes as other Democrats have questioned Kennedy’s vaccine skepticism.
“I think Bernie will give him a fair assessment,” a source close to the senator said.
“I definitely think his Senate office will take the opportunity to highlight the flaws in the industrial food system, supply chains, etc.,” a source close to Sanders’ office said.
The source added: “I think they’ve already done a bit of that.”
THE Hill noted that Sanders wrote an opinion piece for the Tutor about many of his health care reform proposals:
The Vermont senator advocated for comprehensive reform of the food industry, writing: “Big food companies should not make record profits by making children addicted to processed foods, making them overweight and prone to diabetes and other diseases. »
His criticism echoes what Kennedy discussed on the campaign trail and as part of his Trump-aligned “Make America Healthy Again” initiative. “To start, we need to ban junk food ads targeting children and put strong warning labels on products high in sugar, salt and saturated fat,” Sanders wrote. “Longer term, we can rebuild rural America with family farms that produce healthy, nutritious food.”
“Fetterman impressed me with his willingness to meet with Trump’s nominees without the normal partisan spin and name-calling attached to the process,” a Kennedy source said in a statement to the Hill.
“To me, he signals to MAGA that he is open to working together in areas that can benefit people and help everyday people,” the source added.
The source said Fetterman is “definitely a tie-breaking vote for all of Trump’s nominees.”
The same sources said that Senator Cory Booker (Democrat of New Jersey) could be another potential Democrat to support Kennedy.
