Senate Democrats cancel COVID testing to advance reconciliation bill

Senate Democrats reportedly rolled back their coronavirus testing policy over the weekend to push through a reconciliation bill, dubbed the “Cutting Inflation Act.”

“Senate Democrats, some of whom have denounced their GOP colleagues’ lenient attitude toward masking, recently adopted an unofficial ‘Don’t Test, Don’t Tell’ protocol, particularly as they s are working to pass the landmark Inflation Reduction Act this weekend,” Puck reported.

The policy shift is the result of Democrats fearing their coronavirus policy could undermine their ability to pass the legislation.

The law, which is announced to reduce inflation, will actually push inflation even higher to President Joe Biden’s 40-year high. “The supposedly game-changing legislative breakthrough that brought together Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) after months of negotiations over the failed Build Back Better is cynically qualified as a measure to counter the budget deficit,” Breitbart News reported. “This makes sense from a crude political standpoint because inflation is the number one problem facing American families and is pushing the economy into a stagflationary recession”:

The first clue that this is not going to be inflation-reducing legislation is that the bill includes a massive expansion in government spending. There’s about $385 billion in spending on energy and climate change, according to the nonpartisan Committee for a Responsible Budget. There’s $100 billion in new health care spending in the form of expanded Obamacare subsidies and expanded coverage for prescription drugs and vaccines.

However, the bill is not finalized. Under the Senate reconciliation rules, the Senate congressman still has to resolve several issues with partisan legislation, such as Medicare drug price denials, climate change and health care provisions. Democrats are using reconciliation to circumvent the 60-vote filibuster.
