Self-hosting has a moment, even if it is difficult to define exactly what it is.
It is a niche that goes beyond computer devices and regular networks, but does not respond to a full home laboratory. (Most home laboratories involve self-hosting, but not all self-bookings make a home laboratory.) He adds confidentiality, provides alternatives without DRM and reduces advertising. It is often presented as a way to make the most of your storage attached to the network (NAS), but it is much more than the backup and multimedia streaming.
Does self-hostagement perform services on your network for which most people rely on cloud companies? In general, yes. But take a look at the Selfh.st / Podcast / Newsletter site, R / Auto-Hostteddit and all Github project pages that connect to each other, and you will also find things that no cloud supplier offers.
Ethan Sholly, owner of the Selfh.St site, the occasional newsletter and podcast, recently traveled me the current state of self-hosting, and he shared some of the conclusions of his investigations on the people who make all of this small-scale server administration.

Sholly works in finance, not technology, but he was a computer minor with just enough knowledge to make plex work on a desktop computer for his friends and family. “I would receive a call or an SMS:” Can you light your office – it’s the cinema evening “,” said Sholly.
He gradually extended to the construction of his own tower server with 10 teraoctet training. Once he covered his needs for the media, the question has inevitably become “what can I be myself-hebergered?” He dug, walked and ended up with tons of rest and Github project pages.
Sholly, an “old-fashioned RSS” Drugged RSS “,” wanted a place to find the most commonly recommended applications and news of their modifications and updates. It did not exist, so he assembled, coded and shared. He also started writing on the stage in his newsletter, who has more personality and punch that you expect from someone in a large-speaker.
After Plex has increased the prices of the subscription and changed its commercial model in March, Sholly wrote in his newsletter that, although there were valid concerns about privacy and future guidelines, that would be the right time to note something else: the majority of people do not donate to a single self-heberged project.
