See Naomi Campbell Wear a 1997 Chanel Dress Again

Naomi Campbell may be best known for getting the opportunity to wear the latest and greatest from almost any brand she wants, but her latest outing proves she also has the chops to bring back the classics. At the red carpet premiere of Furiosa: A Mad Max saga At the 77th Cannes Film Festival, the model re-wore a look from Chanel’s Spring/Summer 1997 couture collection, a dress she wore on the catwalk nearly 30 years ago.

The sequin dress, however, was updated in 2024. In its debut, the shimmering black dress included a long, silky jumpsuit underneath to add a layer of modesty. However, when Campbell wore the dress today, the slip was gone, revealing her legs beneath the skirt, which had strips of sheer panels peeking out between the sequins. The rest of the dress remained the same, including the delicate beaded straps, plunging sides, and straight neckline. She finished the look with sleek black pumps and wore her hair in huge curls.

When the design hit the runway in 1997, it was worn with similar black shoes, although Campbell wore the Karl Lagerfeld-designed dress with a bun and sparkling barrette. He then described the collection as “hysterical Chanel”.

“It’s hysterical Chanel,” said the designer Vogue. Fashion writer Amanda Harlech told Hamish Bowles: “It’s about Chanel proportions and luxury taken to the extreme of nervous breakdown!

Campbell may be in Cannes for the movies and the glamour, but she has other reasons to celebrate. BMW announced that its new model, the XM Mystique Allure, was inspired by Campbell. According to WWD“The new car is in the model’s favorite color, ultramarine, a deep blue that can almost pass for purple and is finished in matte. The interiors feature rich velor fabrics and shimmering metallic glitter.” The car is expected to debut at the Cannes Film Festival this year.

“Seeing BMW’s vision for the BMW XM Mystique Allure come to life has been truly incredible. I feel deeply honored to have inspired their first haute couture show car, which is a unique masterpiece in every way,” said Campbell.
