The new masters of Damascus have carried out a vast campaign of arrests in the Alawite neighborhoods of the city of Homs against followers of the ousted former president Bashar al-Assad. The Syrian administration announced the seizure of several “arms depots”.
The new masters of Damascus continue to fight against the last bastions of the former deposed president. After the clashes in the coastal areas of Latakia and Tartous, against armed groups affiliated with Bashar el-Assad, Hayat Tahrir el-Sham (HTC) carried out a vast operation in Homs, in Alawite neighborhoods.
According to information reported by Al-Jazeera, a campaign of arrests took place in this Syrian city. Citing security sources, the Qatari channel reports that a certain number of wanted people have been arrested, “notably one of the closest collaborators of Suhail al-Hassan”, a senior commander in the Syrian Arab army.
A five-day arrest campaign
The official Syrian agency SANA also reported the arrest of Muhammad Nour al-Din Shalhoum, responsible for monitoring Sadnaya prison. This campaign of arrests in Homs lasted more than five days, according to the Department of Public Security.
“The sweeping campaign has ended in the neighborhoods of Homs, its objectives having been achieved,” said Sana, quoting the head of General Security of Homs without naming him.
It would have allowed the arrest of “criminals who have harmed the Syrian people for 13 years and refused to surrender their weapons”, according to the Syrian agency. Anyone who “committed such crimes” will be held accountable, promised the official cited by the agency, inviting residents to report “any violation” on the part of fighters.
640 detainees in Homs and its surroundings
“The security campaign was focused in the Al-Zahra’a neighborhood, encompassing the areas of Al-Sabeel, Al-Muhajireen, Al-Abbasiyah and Al-Arman, as well as the Wadi Al-Dahab neighborhood , which includes the suburbs of Al-Waleed, Al-Zaytoun, Al-Khodari Street and parts of Karm Al-Zaytoun,” said the Syrian Observatory for Rights of Man (OSDH).
He indicated that these arrests had “port[é] the number of detainees in the city of Homs and the villages of the eastern countryside to 640 people.
The director of the Department of Public Security in Homs affirmed that this “security campaign” had made it possible to seize “several weapons depots” which allegedly belonged to loyalists of the former Syrian president. The new administration insisted that those arrested must face justice and that any act of retaliation against them would not be tolerated.
Since the fall of former President Bashar el-Assad on December 8, the new masters of Damascus have been working to secure their power over the entire Syrian territory.
