The U.S. Secret Service discovered a suspicious hunting stand Thursday near Palm Beach International Airport with a direct line of sight to where President Donald Trump exits Air Force One, the agency confirmed Sunday to NBC News.
The FBI is now investigating the discovery, said Anthony Guglielmi, a spokesman for the US Secret Service, in a statement.
“The U.S. Secret Service works closely with the FBI and our law enforcement partners in Palm Beach County. During Palm Beach’s pre-arrival security preparations, which included the use of technology and comprehensive physical scans, our teams identified items of interest in the vicinity of Palm Beach International Airport,” Guglielmi said.
He added that “no movement had any impact and no individuals were present or involved at the scene.”
Fox News was first to report the discovery.
Trump traveled to Florida on Friday and is spending the weekend in West Palm Beach, where he often stays at his Mar-a-Lago resort to play golf.
The president has faced multiple threats over the past two years, since last year’s election campaign and after being elected to another presidential term.
He faced two assassination attempts last year: once when he was targeted in a shooting at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, last July and again while playing golf in Florida last September.
In Pennsylvania, Thomas Crooks, a 20-year-old Butler area man, was killed by Secret Service agents after opening fire on Trump from the roof of a building near the rally site.
And in the Florida case, Ryan Routh, now 59, hid in the bushes at a West Palm Beach golf course in what prosecutors described as a plot to kill the then-presidential candidate. But a Secret Service agent spotted Routh before Trump reached that part of the route, ultimately leading to Routh’s arrest.
Last month, a jury found Routh guilty of the Florida assassination attempt. He is expected to be sentenced in December.
One man – Corey Comperatore, a 50-year-old former fire chief – was killed in the Pennsylvania shooting and two others were injured.
Earlier this year, West Palm Beach police arrested a 46-year-old man for allegedly threatening on social media to kill Trump before his inauguration.
In another case earlier this year, a Wisconsin man was arrested for falsifying threats against Trump while trying to entrap and deport another man.
