Prince Andrew’s involvement in an alleged Chinese spy came at a time when his chief assistant and other members of the royal family thought that his reputation was “irreparable”.
Secret documents previously detail how former opponent Dominic Hampshire saw Yang Tengbo as “Andrew’s only light at the end of the tunnel” after his interview with Newsnight in 2019.
The documents also reveal the details of Andrew’s “communication chain” with Chinese President Xi Jinping – including the sending of an annual birthday letter – and how the MI5 intervened to warn that FENEW having contacts with the presumed spy.
The documents were disclosed after the publication of the BBC and other media pushed to them by the courts.
Mr. Yang denied all the reprehensible acts.
Recently published articles include the full declaration of Mr. Hampshire’s testimony, which he wrote in support of Mr. Yang and sought to remain deprived.
He sheds new light on the links between the Royal and the presumed spy, which has become an adviser to Andrew’s commercial companies. The document also reveals:
Mr. Hampshire’s declaration details how Andrew thought that, with the help of Mr. Yang, he could save a leading public position by pursuing commercial opportunities in China – even if, as his aid recognized, links with Beijing are “not a good appearance nowhere or for anyone”.
Andrew had a “communication chain” with the Chinese president, reveals the document, which, according to Mr. Hampshire, had been widely used to promote his Pitch @ palace starting initiative in China.
He said that due to “cultural differences”, Mr. Yang helped him write letters to XI, including in relation to the Eurasia funds, an investment vehicle for which Andrew was looking to collect funds.
In a separate document published on Friday, Mr. Yang confirmed that he had personally presented the fund to XI and the larger Chinese government.
Mr. Hampshire declared in his declaration as a witness that there was “nothing to hide” in the exchanges between Andrew and XI – and they were full of “high -level nothingness”, as the birthday wishes.
Hampshire said the late Queen Elizabeth II was aware of contact with China and that they were “perhaps even encouraged”.
He described Andrew as a “precious communication point with China” – although the document reveals that Mr. Hampshire thought that “China would prefer a different royal”.
After the release of newspapers on Friday, the Buckingham palace stressed that the king had no connection with Mr. Yang.
The alleged spy was “mentioned at any time or in any way” during meetings with Andrew, said the palace, and no approval was given for any commercial relationship with him.
These last revelations show how an isolated figure had become after his disastrous interview with BBC Newsnight 2019 – as well as the intrigue of the palace surrounding his attempts to recover his position.
The spinoffs of the interview led the prince to withdraw from public tasks and led to the end of Pitch @ palace events in the United Kingdom and China, a program widely considered as one of Andrew’s most successful companies.
Mr. Yang had lived in the United Kingdom since 2002 and had become a confident of trust in Andrew following the interview.
Commenting on the mood in the palace after the interview, who saw him questioned about his friendship with the sex offender condemned Jeffrey Epstein, Mr. Hampshire said that he was “clear” that the “reputation of the Duke was irremediable”.
The documents show how, as Andrew’s public status has dropped, the role of Mr. Yang as a potential bridge towards commercial opportunities in China has increased by its importance.
In addition, Mr. Hampshire has also thought about his concerns about people who are trying to break into Andrew “in order to earn excessive money from the Duke or their association with him”.
In December, the Special Immigration Appeal Commission (SIAC) said that Mr. Yang had formed an “unusual degree of confidence” with Andrew.
He noted that Mr. Yang had not disclosed his ties with an arm of the Chinese Communist Party (CCC) which is involved in a clandestine “political interference”.
This term is used for suspicion of Chinese state agents who use their position to secretly influence the main decision -makers of the British state, including politicians, academics and business leaders.
These agents aim to subtly and slowly make key figures susceptible to the objectives of the CCP in a long -term operation often called “elite capture”.
It has already been revealed that Mr. Hampshire assigned Mr. Yang to recover Andrew’s reputation in China.
