Sean McVay – Rams heading toward RB Cam Akers trade

LOS ANGELES — Rams head coach Sean McVay said general manager Les Snead has spoken with “a handful of teams” about trading for running back Cam Akers, and “it’s the direction we are heading in.”

Akers was cut Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers, which McVay called a “coach’s decision” that was made in the “best interest” of the team.

Akers, a 2020 second-round pick, is in the final season of his rookie contract with the Rams. He had 22 carries for 29 yards and a touchdown in Los Angeles’ season-opening victory.

Before Sunday’s game, Akers sent a message to X saying, “I’m as confused as everyone else. But I’m blessed.”

McVay said Monday that Akers’ social media post was “surprising.”

“I am very pleased with the clarity that was given to him on Friday and Saturday, both through him and through him. [agent] David Mulugheta,” McVay said. “And it’s unfortunate, but I feel like it was very clear in terms of our dialogue.”

Last season, Akers spent nearly a month away from the Rams midway through the season after McVay said he explored the possibility of finding the running back “a fresh start with another team.” Earlier last year, McVay told reporters he wanted to see more urgency from Akers. McVay said Sunday that this situation with Akers “is different” than what happened last season.

Kyren Williams, who replaced Akers as the Rams’ fullback, scored twice against the 49ers, rushing for 52 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries and catching six passes for 48 yards and a touchdown.
