Sean McVay keeps Matthew Stafford contact issue ‘in-house’

Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford wants more guaranteed money beyond the 2024 season. At last word, Rams coach Sean McVay seemed inclined to give it to him.

And that will apparently be McVay’s last word until it’s done.

Speaking to reporters Tuesday, McVay repeatedly said the matter would remain “in-house.”

“Out of respect for the situation, we’re just going to keep it in-house,” McVay said. “What I like is that he’s here in the lead and it’s been a good few days for him.”

Stafford participated in voluntary OTAs despite lacking the security he sought. He could also be looking for more money following last week’s mega-deal for the quarterback the Rams dumped to get Stafford in the first place.

“He’s here and we appreciate him, and he knows it,” McVay said. “I’ve had some good conversations with him about football and everything else, I’m definitely going to keep that in-house.”

Reporters tried once again to get something out of McVay, asking if discussions on a revised contract were “still open.”

“Internally,” McVay said. “I respect the questions, really. But, you know, out of respect for the totality of the situation and really, there’s a lot of things that we want to be able to keep in-house. And if there is any information about it, you will definitely know about it and maybe share it on your Twitter.

McVay’s comments confirm that there is indeed a “situation” that has not yet been resolved. Stafford could have easily suspended his services during OTAs until the situation was properly addressed. He’s apparently taking a leap of faith that that will be the case, perhaps before training camp.

If not, he will have to decide whether to run or not.
