In a battle between two incumbent members of Congress, it was Rep. Sean Casten who emerged victorious in Tuesday’s primary election in the redesigned 6th Congressional District, beating fellow incumbent Rep. Marie Newman, according to NBC News.
The two congressmen were forced to face off after the 2020 census, with Illinois lawmakers luring Casten and Newman to the same district.
Casten, who ousted former Rep. Peter Roskam in 2018, served two terms in Congress, serving on the Financial Services Committee and the Science, Space and Technology Committee.
Newman defeated fellow Democrat Dan Lipinski in the 2020 primary before winning his congressional seat in the general election. A Wisconsin graduate, Newman is a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus and the Congressional Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, among other assignments.
Casten will now await the winner of the Republican primary in the November general election, which will be held on November 8.
