A man was arrested on Tuesday morning after pretending to beat a sea lion suffering from poisoning at Domo acid on Ventura beach, the authorities according to the authorities.
Surveillance images captured a man later identified as Christopher Hurtado, 32, attacking a California sea lion on Harbor Boulevard, according to a press release from the Ventura police department. Man hit the stranded animal with a large stick.
The police arrested Hurtado, who tried to flee and found methamphetamine, police said. Hurtado was sentenced to suspicion of cruelty to criminal animals, criminal possession of a controlled substance and violation of federal laws protecting marine mammals.
The marine lion suffered from poisoning with domoic acid, officials said. California state parks have informed the US Fish and Wildlife Service.
According to Channel Islands Marine and Wildlife Institute, the adult California sea lion was taken to a treatment center.
“This is a crime under the Navy Mammal Protection Act of harassing or intentionally injuring sea lions. We are grateful to the rapid response of the Ventura police service and we look forward to working with them and the California state parks on this survey, “said deputy director Greg Busch with the Oceanic National Oceanic Forces Office.
Domoic acid is a neurotoxin produced by harmful algae proliferations that accumulate in the food fish of filters, including anchovies and sardines. These fish are then consumed by seals, sea lions and dolphins.
The exhibition damages the brain and the heart in mammals. Symptoms include convulsions, a head movement to the head known as “stars” and a comatose state. Experts advise humans not to interact with animals that are considered sick because they could bite or rush without warning.
Animals can be treated, but move a sickly sea lion to an establishment can be difficult because an adult woman can weigh up to 250 pounds and an adult male up to 1,000 pounds, forcing several people to move each animal.
Marine animals are protected by federal and federal law. If you see a sick or injured animal, call the Hotlèmes de lièmes de Îles Channel Islands Marine & Wildlife at (805) 567-1505.
The California Wildlife Center takes between 50 and 100 messages every day on sea lions suffering from toxicity of domoic acid since an epidemic has been reported off the coast of Malibu.
A similar epidemic was recorded last summer affecting more than 70 sea lions, as well as two dolphins and two fur seals along the coast in the counties of Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo.
