SEA Airport travelers face long lines due to cyberattack

SEATTLE — Tens of thousands of travelers faced long lines at SEA Airport on Sunday as the airport continued to work to resolve a cyberattack it is facing.

“It was very busy,” Jean Koerner said. “Very, very, very busy. The line was constant.”

Especially when passengers are trying to check in their luggage.

“It impacted the baggage system,” Koerner said. “So they told us via email and text message to try not to check bags if we could. Well, we can’t do that, we have a very large bag.”

According to SEA officials, flight safety was not compromised. But our crews observed long flights at security checkpoints on Sunday afternoon.

“The lines seem really long,” said Andrew Brackin, who was driving home to San Francisco on Sunday. “It seems tough given the outages, people are just trying to get home on a Sunday. They want to get home by Monday, so it’s tough.”

Airports like SEA are facing another disruption to their systems this summer. Last month, the outage caused by the mass strike impacted not only this airport, but other airports and industries around the world. Travelers are hoping this weekend’s cyberattack won’t have the same effect.

“I hope that’s not the case,” Brackin said. “Because I know it caused huge delays and people had trouble getting on flights for days, so I hope this outage gets resolved much more quickly.”

It is not yet clear when the cyberattack will be resolved, as SEA officials and crews work to uncover the truth.

“A lot of people are counting on you to do your job and solve problems as quickly as possible,” Koerner said.
