The Socialists & Democrats group expelled European Parliament Vice-President Eva Kaili on Monday with “immediate effect”, after suspending her three days ago following her arrest in connection with a corruption probe.
The party also demanded that Kaili be removed as vice-president during this week’s plenary session in Strasbourg. She was suspended from this role after her arrest on Friday on suspicion of “criminal organization, corruption and money laundering”.
Kaili is shadow rapporteur for the Cyber Resilience Act. Responsibility for the reassignment of rapporteurs lies with the coordinators, said Jaume Guillot, Parliament’s chief spokesperson.
Kaili’s position as shadow rapporteur is “a more informal arrangement within the group”, so there is no need to validate the decision of such an appointment with the coordinators or other committee members, Guillot told POLITICO. .
