Limond was a European, British and Commonwealth champion in his prime.

He fought Amir Khan when the British boxing legend was an undefeated rising star in 2007, flooring him before ultimately losing by stoppage.

Limond was scheduled to return to the ring for a fight with Joe Laws on May 3.

However, on Monday St Andrews Sporting Club (who were due to host the event) posted: “Everyone at St Andrew’s Sporting Club is shocked and deeply saddened by the loss of our friend, Willie Limond.

“Willie was not only a sporting legend, but an infectious character who will be missed by us all.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Jake, Drew, Macy and the rest of the Limond family at this time.”

Laws also took to social media and said: “Everyone would have heard of the tragic news regarding my opponent Willie Limond.

“I’m devastated, listen old son. wait for me at the pearly gates, we can make it.

“I’m at a loss for words, man, the next one’s for you.”
