Scotland crisis deepens as striker withdraws from Euro 2024 squad due to ‘freak’ injury

Scotland star Lyndon Dykes has been ruled out of Euro 2024 after a serious injury suffered in training.

The QPR striker was stretchered off as the Scotland squad met for Euro 2024 on Friday afternoon.

That leaves Steve Clarke with just two recognized forwards in his provisional squad of 28 injured players – Hearts star Lawrence Shankland and Southampton’s Che Adams.

To rub salt on other wounds, the injury to Dykes, who was a key player for the Tartan Army in Euro qualifying, was a freak accident.

Scotland star Ryan Christie said: “All the boys are gutted for Lyndon yesterday because it was a weird thing that happened. We had a few injuries before the summer so it’s frustrating.

“Dykesy has been away for a while now after the Championship season. I’m quite close to him and I know how hard he worked during his weeks off.

“It’s just one of those things and there’s not much me or the other boys can say to him at the moment.

“We’re just trying to support him and support him, and I’m sure he’ll continue to support him.”

Fears first emerged that Dykes could have suffered a serious injury on Friday afternoon after being stretched out on a stretcher during training as Scotland were due to face Gibraltar in a friendly.

The 28-year-old has played in all of Scotland’s Euro qualifying matches, scoring a total of nine times in 36 caps.

Clarke’s men open the tournament against hosts Germany on June 14, with the Scotland boss already suffering several injuries.

Everton star Nathan Patterson, Bologna captain Lewis Ferguson and Brentford ace Aaron Hickey are all missing this summer.

And there are further concerns over Southampton’s Stuart Armstrong and Rangers defender John Souttar, who have been training away from the main squad after missing the end of the season with their respective clubs.

Key quartet Scott McTominay, Scott McKenna, Greg Taylor and Ben Doak were all absent on the first day of training.

Liverpool ace Doak, who has not played once for Scotland, has been a surprise in the squad, having only recently returned to training with the Reds following knee surgery in December.
