Florida substitute teacher resigned after students said she shouted a racial insult in class

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla – A substitute teacher in Florida has resigned after students said she shouted racist slurs in class.

The 59-year-old white woman continued to use the insult after going to the principal’s office at the Lealman Innovation Academy on Wednesday, Pinellas County school officials told the Tampa Bay Times.

Headmistress Connisheia Garcia is black, as are about 75% of students at the St. Petersburg school, which focuses on personalized learning for students in grades six to twelve.

District spokeswoman Isabel Mascareñas said the principal reported the substitute human resources teacher and she was put on a not-to-use list.

“They were planning a time to review,” the complaint, she told the newspaper. “Before they could fix a date, she quit.”

The woman had worked at several schools without incident after being hired on July 1, Mascareñas said.
