Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s (R-GA) crusade to politicize the murder of Laken Riley took an absurd turn Tuesday, as the politician said the young American student would have been better off being deported.
Greene directed the strange comment at Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, who was appearing before the House Homeland Security Committee on Tuesday to testify on the budget.
Greene took the opportunity to talk about what she called the “open border” that she said allowed undocumented immigrants to enter the country. She tried to connect her argument to Laken Riley, the 22-year-old nursing student who police say was killed by an undocumented immigrant while she was jogging, but even she couldn’t keep his hateful tirade straight.
“You should have deported her so she could be alive today,” Greene said. “His parents would have appreciated that.”

Last month, Riley’s father said he was angered that Greene and other GOP members brought up his daughter’s death for their own political purposes.
“I would prefer it not to be so political, as you say, it has set off a storm in our country,” Jason Riley told the Today broadcast about the death of his daughter, “and that incited a lot of people.”
“I think it’s being used politically to get these votes,” he said. “It pisses me off. I feel like, you know, they’re just using my daughter’s name for this. And she was way better than that, and she should be raised for the person that she is. He was an angel.
On the day of Joe Biden’s State of the Union address, an immigration bill passed the Republican-led House and supported by 37 Democrats. If signed into law, the Laken Riley Act would require U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to arrest undocumented immigrants who commit theft-related crimes.
“Do you know Laken Riley?” was the only question the Republican congresswoman had about the Biden administration’s budget demands, the rest were pointing fingers at an official she already voted to impeach.
House GOP members plan to deliver the articles of impeachment against Mayorkas to the Senate on Tuesday afternoon, ahead of what is expected to be a brief trial that begins Wednesday.
