Savannah Guthrie joked that she was “excited and upset” about the 2024 Olympics opening ceremony.
“We’re moving on from the liberty part, which got us a little upset and disturbed in the pouring rain,” the “Today” co-host said after a three-way romance was featured in the “Liberty” segment of the “Liberty, Equality, Fraternity” sketch that aired, according to Us Weekly.
The segment followed two male and female dancers who meet in a library. Before they ascend a spiral staircase, a book titled “The Triumph of Love” was projected on the screen.
As they climbed the spiral staircase, the female teased her two male peers by almost kissing them.
The trio then entered a room and began flirtatiously fondling each other. Before things got too heated, they kicked the camera out of the room and playfully closed the door.
Kelly Clarkson, who is a commentator for NBC during the Paris Games, also felt some type of resentment about the steamy stunt.
“We’re not invited, okay. That was just rude,” she joked.
NBC commentator Mike Tirico then explained the significance of the trio.
“The artistic director, Thomas Jolly, therefore decided to rely on certain clichés concerning France,” he noted. “The City of Lights, known for being a romantic city. Many works written or set here talk about love.”
“In this segment, love and literature meet. Or maybe we should say three.”
Social media users also had plenty to say about the alluring performance.
“I didn’t get the Olympics opening ceremony celebrating polyamory among their celebration of love, but I’m here for it,” said one satisfied viewer. tweeted.
“LOL the threesome live on TV! At the opening ceremony of the Olympics! Ok Paris! 😂😂😂,” added another one.
A third viewer pleaded for fans to learn more about the trio.
“If this trio from the opening ceremony is not brought back for the closing ceremony, what good will it all have been?” they asked“Show them again, I’m too invested, open the door to this apartment again!”
The Olympic opening ceremony also featured heavy metal band Gojira performing along the Seine, a dazzling performance by Lady Gaga and a powerful return by Celine Dion.
Dion closed the evening by singing “Hymn to Love” at the foot of the Eiffel Tower.
It was his first performance since announcing his diagnosis of stiff person syndrome in December 2022.
