Horse racing tips for Saturday April 27

  • SANDOWN – 1.50: Masai Mara 20/1 one way (1pt) & A Feasa of Bradan 22/1 (1pt), 2.25: The real killer 5/2 (1.5pts), 3h00: The Fabiolo 10/11 (2pts) 3h35: Kitty’s Light 4/1 each way (2pts)
  • LEICESTER-2.05: Miss Cantik 9/1 E/O (0.5pt) & Roar of thunder 5/1 E/W (1pt)
  • FIREPLACE – 2h45: Sparks 7/1 E/W (0.5 pt), 3.53: Bright Thunder (1 pt)

Masai Mara and An Bradan Feasa

An Bradan Feasa is only four years old but held his own in two tough competitions this year, placing fourth in listed company behind Liari, Roaring Legend and Balboa.

He then moved to the Juvenile Handicap Hurdle and finished a respectable eighth in difficult conditions in a stacked field.

It’s a little easier but there are still a plethora of better horses out there, but he has lost another 3lbs which makes him a huge chance at a huge price.

The same can be said for the unexposed Maasai Mara, which will carry very little since it only has a 119 rating.

But that’s still potentially too low for his potential having shown real ability to win at Catterick in February, comfortably beating Golden Maverick, before placing just four lengths behind Insurrection last time out, which saw him climb of 7 pounds.

These two got well away from the rest of the field and it was possible that he could have gotten even closer if he hadn’t been hit before the last obstacle.

The real killer

The Oaksey Chase, a Grade 2 2m6f competition, was considerably open with a few undeclared.

Ahoy Senor is out and leaves The Real Whacker, Hitman, Ga Law and many other big prizes to become the favorites.

Easy Game represents Willie Mullins’ high hopes of another big win in the jumps final, with £45,000 on offer for the winner.

But it’s only a fortnight after he struggled at Aintree and that’s perhaps a bit too much to ask for a horse who has won twice and struggled twice in a year, with around two month break between each race.

Hitman hasn’t won since November 2022 and it’s hard to back him ahead of The Real Whacker, against a horse that has been up and down around his current mark in defeat.

The Real Whacker has, however, run well in Grade 1 company this season, in the toughest races, including the King George VI Chase.

He then came second at Cheltenham behind Capodanno and it looks like he would be able to give a tough endurance test if he runs from the front over the extended 2m6f.

The Fabiolo

While this is a worrying race for the 2/9 favorite, this very race brings him closer to being tied for this race, which would be unheard of if he had run well.

Willie Mullins will put him in top condition and he is looking to win the British Champion Trainer title this weekend and could add a huge gap to his lead with this victory with almost £100,000 on offer.

Jonbon and Gaelic Warrior present El Fabiolo’s biggest threats, but Jonbon is set to re-emerge after just two weeks after bypassing the Cheltenham Festival and did well in reaching 2m4f for the first time at Aintree’s Melling Chase.

Gaelic Warrior could be the future of 2m chases for Mullins, but he is only six years old and should be the danger next season after having another summer to progress further.

El Fabiolo is expected to bounce back convincingly with his only danger Jonbon, who was carried to 2m4f last time out and may need this run at a good pace to have a chance when El Fabiolo returns more strong.

Kitty’s Light

It’s hard not to like this endurance specialist, who adapted incredibly well to place in the Grand National two weeks ago.

He loves it at Sandown, placing twice in this race before winning last year.

He’s still only eight years old and he clearly still has a lot of ground left and he’s as tough as the rest on the field.

Especially since he didn’t move up in weight for this effort, just 5 pounds more than when he won last year.

Miss Cantik and Thunder Roar

Miss Cantik was in a deadlock with Excellent Truth in May 2023 in France, this runner won in a Group 3 at Deauville then placed six in the Group 1 Prix de l’Opéra Longines at Paris Longchamp.

It’s encouraging form as she has since been placed in listed company herself and arrives here on her British debut with a rating of 99 which could be forgiving if the filly has developed well over the winter.

Meanwhile, Thunder Roar gets a 6lb difference and advantage over Look Back Smiling who won at Doncaster in March.

Thunder Roar was close behind, having gone up just 3lbs for this on his first attempt over 1m.

Meanwhile, Look Back Smiling, who was given 2 books by Thunder Roar, now has to give 4 books! Which should be the perfect time to hit the Night Of Thunder gelding, who has been incredibly consistent under the training of Tony Coyle and Kaine Wood.

Sparks

Sparks Fly really let the sparks fly at Sainz in October to win by 12 lengths in a Listed fillies and mares contest, but was further than that behind the winner three weeks later over course and distance in another race from Listed.

It was, however, a tough race against some of the best horses and geldings, with the winner, Tribalist, now receiving an overall score of 116.

She might be best observed in her seasonal reappearance after a long and tiring 2023 campaign, with a race averaging every three weeks from January onwards, but fresh from a break she is very interesting.

The filly has won six times in a row to go from a rating of 59 to 98 and challenged that mark again here in September in a Class 2, she is still 9lbs for this win in France but probably deserves a small each way if she can. keep improving like she does.

Bright thunder

Trainer Karl Burke’s three-year-olds are racing with a better win rate than his overall strike rate this season with five winners from just 24 runners since January 2024.

He sends Bright Thunder under Shane Gray who receives 5lb from Shemozzle who gets a penalty for winning on his debut at Newmarket in October.

She has an excellent pedigree but appears vulnerable to a potential threat from the successful yard.
