People are bringing red hats, coats and room for plenty of beer on Saturday as the annual SantaCon celebration returns to New York.
The holiday-themed pub crawl emerged after participants dressed as Santa first came together in a kind of performance art in the 1990s and started hanging out in bars in the early 1990s. 2000. It’s now a full-scale operation with organizers, drink specials and a charity campaign.

The festivities began at 10 a.m. at the intersection of Broadway Ave. and West 39th St. and continued in midtown Manhattan bars.
As pubcrawlers cruise through the city, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority enforces an alcohol ban from 4 a.m. Saturday to noon Sunday.

SantaCon was suspended in 2020 due to COVID but relaunched a year ago. This year, city health officials are warning of a resurgence in COVID cases, as well as influenza and RSV, and Wearing a mask recommended in crowded outdoor environments and public indoor environments.
SantaCon pub crawls also take place outside of New York. According to SantaCon.info, a site that tracks all events, dozens of SantaCons take place on Saturdays and throughout the week, from Los Angeles to Louisville, Kentucky.
