The declaration of the Regent Paul Brown was added.
Ann Arbor, mid – after only three years, Santa Ono left his role as president of the University of Michigan.
Ono was chosen as the only finalist for the same position at the University of Florida. He expects to assume this role this summer, he announced during a release of May 4 through his UM office.
“I informed the chairman of the Board of Directors of the University of Michigan, Kathy White, of my decision,” he said in the statement. “This decision was not taken lightly, given the deep link (his wife) Wendy and I were trained with this extraordinary community.”
Several regents have not answered or have denied having commented on the news at the moment.
Regent Paul Brown said it was “an honor and a privilege to work with him and his wonderful family”.
“I wish him good luck,” said Brown.
Ono was hired in October 2022 to replace Mark Schlissel after being found that Schlissel was in an inappropriate relationship with a subordinate. This dismissal took place at the same time as the university was faced with disputes over the sexual abuse scandal of Dr. Robert Anderson, as well as a certain number of reforms of his policy of report and investigation into sexual unconduities.
Ono was previously president of the University of British Columbia, and before that, the president of the University of Cincinnati.
The University of Florida announced that we were appointed the sole finalist for the post of president in his own publication of May 4. Its board of directors must approve the appointment of Ono to make it official.
“The register experienced by Dro Ono of academic excellence, innovation and collaborative leadership in world class institutions has made it our unanimous choice,” said the University of Florida. “We are convinced that he is the right person to rely on the solid UF foundation and help to achieve our daring vision of the future.”
Ono would be the full -time replacement of the former president of the UF, Ben Sasse, who resigned in July 2024.
His three -year term has seen the disclosure of the 2050 Campus Plan, which explains how the Ann Arbor campus will be transformed over the next 25 years. This has also seen him help to facilitate the agreement to innovate at the University of Michigan innovation center in Detroit, which has long been mired in standby negotiations.
He and the Board of Regents also expanded the free tuition fee program known as Go Blue Guaranteed to families winning $ 125,000 or less.
He and the Council were also criticized for reductions in diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives, including the closure of the Dei office. Pro-Palestinian activists have also said that he and the board of directors had too repressed their demonstrations and stifled freedom of expression on the campus.
Ono underlined his farewell message to his administration which founded the Institute of Civil Speech, which aims to strengthen “debate and dialogue through various ideologies and political perspectives”.
“These achievements bear witness to the collaborative spirit, the creativity and dedication of our entire university community,” he said in the release of Sunday. “They reflect a deep commitment to ensure that the best days in Michigan are still in advance.”
