Santa Ana football coach Rory Schoonmaker is leaving after one season at the helm to take the head coaching job at El Segundo, he confirmed.
“I’ve lived in Redondo Beach for the last five years and this is going to give me the opportunity to be a more present father and husband being a lot closer to home,” Schoonmaker said of the move. “I’m working with (Santa Ana) athletic director (Brian) Lillie to help ease the transition and make sure Santa Ana finds the right person.”
Schoonmaker said his hiring at El Segundo was approved Tuesday by its school board.
Last season, he led Santa Ana to a 7-4 record and a share of the Orange Coast League title.
The Saints lost to Santa Monica 33-27 in the first round of the CIF-SS Division 9 playoffs.
Shoonmaker was an assistant for six years at Santa Ana before replacing Charlie TeGantvoort, who left after nine seasons to take over at Marina.
This fall, Santa Ana will compete in the Iota League against El Toro, Canyon, Troy, Sonora and Irvine.
El Segundo finished 4-6 last season. The Eagles last made the playoffs in 2017.
