San Juan Capistrano – The San Juan Hills baseball team has taken place this season with great expectations. The stallions came from a season 21-8 and had a lot of players – many talented players – back in the programming.
But the favorite of the Sea View League had its share of adversity, including injuries.
On Friday against El Toro, these great expectations were met. San Juan Hills won a 9-1 victory in the championship to stop at equal place with the charge.
San Juan Hills won two of the three this week against El Toro, who came from behind to win the match on Monday before the Anthony Racik stall launcher collapsed on Wednesday with a 7-0 laundering.
This time, it was Drew Nelson who limited. The 6 -feet 5 -inch right -hander with the 4.8 GPA made only five strokes and a walk, while withdrawing seven. He only needed 80 throws to launch a full match, and he finished with fulfillment: he withdrew two throats in the seventh.
“It’s disappointing,” said El Toro coach Mike Gonzales about the inadequacy, but he comforted by winning at least one of the three games this week against SJH. “We have a ton of seniors, so we have seen (Nelson) for three years. You have to tip your hat to this performance.
“We always control our own destiny, which is exciting. These guys will beat a lot of people. ”
Apart from a fifth trembling round in which Nelson returned a double to Niko Castillo, a single to Dylan Ortiz, and launched wild land allowing a scoring race, Nelson was almost perfect.
“It’s a huge business to win this match,” said San Juan Hills, Tanner Kessler. “It puts us in first place, he ends their hot sequence. It is always good to win against a good team.”
It would have been a disaster for San Juan Hills if she had lost and had fallen two games late. Instead, the two teams are 4-2 in the Sea View League. San Juan Hills is 10-8 in total, while El Toro fell to 9-7. The charges made their debut this week at n ° 25 in the top 25 of Orange County.
Nelson missed his departure on Monday – the match that SJH lost – due to a gastric flu that he contracted on Sunday.
“I thought my rupture stuff was exceptional but my ball was medium,” he said. “I had to count on the break up because they adapted to the quick ball.
“It was a monumental game for us because it seems that it will be two of us who will face the title. It could be the game that determines the league.”
If that was the case, SJH will have the head-to-face advantage.
There is still a lot of baseball to play, but the two teams had reason to be happy to save what they did with the series.
Nelson (3-3), the AS of Staff Staff, will have the chance to return to their regular place in rotation due to the spring holidays next week and a week of leave after that. Garrett Gandolfo, launcher n ° 3, injured his shoulder not launched on Monday. The third regular basic player, Corbin Nichols, has not played for a month due to a knee injury. The prolonged break therefore arrives at a good time for the stallions.
“We had injuries, illnesses, cases not to play baseball,” said San Juan Hils, Bret Lavier coach. “We made him more exciting than we wanted. I am really satisfied with the way they rebounded on Wednesday and today.
“We have made guys move in the programming, guys who are a little more inexperienced. It is a blessing that we have the depth that we have. We are a little more in the groove in recent weeks to discover what our initial alignment is. ”
How much are the stallions Groovy? In their last six games, in the league, they played well in 5 ½ of them. They were good against San Clemente in a 3-0 defeat a week ago, and they led El Toro, 4-0, before the sixth round on Monday before losing the ninth, 6-4.
Kessler did what he had to do at the top of the order of the strikers. He had a simple, a sacrifice, a double and a walk. He scored three points and finished the match with the dirtiest uniform of the team.
Ethan Meeker made a double, two walks and scored twice.
David Reeves succeeded two singles, one blow per throw, scored two points and rolled in a race.
It is a fairly robust effort of the first three of the order of strikers.
The cleaning shot Jake Vuoso had a double and two points produced, and the striker n ° 5 Hudson Doss succeeded, scored two points and rolled in a race. Strikers No. 6, 7 and 8 also contributed. Clay Riggs and Cash Meyer had an RBI, and Ryan Pimentel had two.
They did it rough on Castillo, the start of El Toro who made three sleeves and abandoned three points, and Hudson Robin, who did the rest of the path and was marked for six points, including four in fourth.
But the most important races were both at the bottom of the first round. This gave Nelson a certain breathing room and the confidence necessary to count on his pitch.
“You have to play for the guys behind you,” said Nelson, who got involved at Brown University. “You want them to win, you want to win for them.”
Everything for one, one for all, right?
“We have taken a few steps forward in the past two weeks,” said Lavier. “We want to make more important steps. We have to play clean baseball, but I like where we are. ”
Today is first place.
