San Jose Sharks Trade Jake Walman in Edmonton Oilers

The makeover of the extreme alignment of the San Jose Sharks continued on Thursday evening with another major job, when they sent the high -level defender Jake Walman to the EDMONTON Oilers for a choice of conditional recovery in 2026 and the striker of the minor League Carl Berglund.

Trade, widely reported earlier Thursday, became official more than an hour after the Sharks match against the Colorado avalanche in Ball Arena. Without Walman and others, the Sharks lost 7-3 against the avalanche in the last match of a seven game road trip.

The conditions for selecting the first -round project in 2026 are as follows: the selection is protected from the 12; If the choice is in the top-12, Edmonton can choose to transfer his first-round selection in 2027 to San Jose instead.

If Edmonton chose to exchange his choice of first round in 2027 before the NHL trade deadline in 2026, their selection of first round in 2026 will be transferred to San Jose, unconditionally.

Berglund, 25, is in his second full season in the minor leagues. With the Bakersfield condors this season, the 6 -foot 2 -inch Swedish origin center and 207 pounds at 12 points in 45 games. He also played Umass-Howll from 2019 to 2023 before becoming a pro.

However, the choice of draft in the first round was the key to the agreement from the Sharks point of view. If this selection landed in 2026, the Sharks will have seven choices that year, including four in the first two laps. Currently, Sharks have four choices for 2027.

Sharks could also use this first round of the Oilers in a business that would provide more immediate aid.

At the NHL trade deadline in 2024, the Sharks exchanged Tomas Hertl at the Vegas Golden Knights and received the Central Prospect David Edstrom and a first -round selection in 2025. The Sharks then dealt with this first -round choice and Edstrom last August to the Nashville predators for the very boosted goalkeeper Yaroslav Askarov, who is now in The AHL but has played 13 games this season for San Jose.

Walman, 29, was with the Sharks in Denver earlier Thursday, participating in the team’s morning skate in Ball Arena a few hours before his match against the avalanche. Walman, however, would have been informed of the trade shortly before the match.

Walman and Luke Kunin were both held from the range of Sharks against the avalanche. Friday, Kunin, a free agent without restriction, could be on the move before the deadline of the NHL trade at noon (PST).

Mario Ferraro, another defender signed until next season, has also been the subject of commercial rumors.

Given the value of Walman, Thursday’s decision may have been the most surprising Sharks of this NHL trade deadline.

The Sharks acquired Walman and a choice of draft in the second round in 2024 among the Red Wings of Detroit last June for future considerations. So far this season, Walman had been the best offensive defender in San Jose with 32 points in 50 games.

As a member of the Sharks defense pair, Walman, who played in all situations, also led the team’s skaters with an average of 23:11 in ice per game.

Walman is in the second year of a $ 10.2 million contract over three years which he signed with Detroit in February 2023.

Before the match on Thursday evening, the Sharks had already exchanged goalkeeper Vasek Vanecek and the Nico Sturm center at Florida panthers in separate offers. In February, San Jose sent striker Mikael Granlund and defender Cody this to Dallas stars, and goalkeeper Mackenzie Blackwood at the avalanche in December.

Walman, however, considered himself a long -term shark, and was impatient to be part of the things when he felt that the team, now in 32nd and last place, would overthrow him.

“I am extremely excited to be here,” Walman told Bay Area News Group in January. “(Adversity) will make things so better when we are a good team. In the years to come, we will look back and think about where we were and where we are now.

“Seeing the constituent elements, I want to be someone growing with these growing pain.”
