Friday evening, the San Jose Sharks could not remain outside the penalty box against the EDMONTON Oilers, and that cost them a chance to end his sequence of prolonged defeats.
The Sharks took five penalties against the Oilers – all stick faults – including the call for the stripping of Alexander Wennberg at 5:54 of the third period. Just 1:38 later, Corey Perry scored an electric game goal, breaking equality and helping to give the Sharks a defeat of 4-2 in Rogers Place.
The Sharks also granted a goal in the first period to Evan Bouchard, went 3 for 5 on the penalty and extended their sequence of defeats at eight games.
Will Smith and Henry Thrun both scored for the Sharks, who gave three power goals to Minnesota Wild on Wednesday evening. The San Jose road trip continues on Sunday against the Calgary flames.
Connor McDavid collected four assists for the Oilers, who won a place in the playoffs.
Sharks’ penalty entered the 29th row in NHL in the NHL with 73.6%.
Thrun scored his second goal of the season at 5:44 of the intermediate period. After taking a pass from William Eklund in the Oilers area, Thrun, along the boards, pulled the washer to the fold, where he left Darnell’s skate, goalkeeper Calvin Pickard to equalize match 2-2.
Goalkeeper Georgi Romanov, still looking for his first NHL victory, is expected to start the match on Friday. Romanov faced the Oilers on April 3 and made 35 stops in a loss of 3-2 Sharks. For the season, Romanov is 0-4-0 with a percentage of .873 stops.
The oilers entered 95 points on Friday and in third place in the Pacific division and only needed a point to get a place in the 16 team playoffs for the fifth consecutive year.
The Sharks entered Chicago Blackhawks on Friday five points on Friday for 31st place in the NHL. To avoid finishing in 32nd and last place for the second consecutive season, the Sharks are expected to collect at least six points in their three remaining games and make the last three games lose time of regulation.
Whatever the team ended in 32nd place will have the best chance (25.5%) to win the LNH recovery lottery next month. No team ended in the last place in the general classification since the Buffalo sabers spoke of the rear in 2013-2014 and 2014-15.
The sabers have still not made the playoffs since 2011, when the director general of Sharks, Mike Grier, now 50 years old, was on the list of Buffalo. Sharks have now missed the playoffs in six consecutive seasons.
The Sharks took two minor penalties during the first period and followed 2-1.
Only six seconds after Smith was called to the bar at 6:41, Bouchard took a pass from Connor McDavid and fired a shot that crossed a screen and passed Georgi Romanov to give the Oilers an advance of 1-0.
At 3:41 p.m., McDavid set up another team, while he separated from Timothy Liljegren and found the former defender of the Sharks Ty Emberson for a rear tap with the goal and a 2-0 advance in Edmonton. The goal was the first of Emberson in 73 games with the Oilers this season.
The Sharks obtained this goal 1:32 later. After an avant-control of Celebrini, Nikolai Kovalenko picked up the puck along the boards and found Smith, whose low shot found the short side on Calvin Pickard for his 18th goal of the season and his fifth goal in his last four games.
Friday’s match marked the return of defender Jan Rutta, who missed the last 27 games with an injury to the lower body and played for the last time on January 23 when the Sharks faced the predators of Nashville.
Rutta, who was in the injured reserve, returned two days after defender Mario Ferraro suffered a broken ankle during the 8-7 defeat of the Sharks against Minnesota Wild on Wednesday. Ferraro blocked Matt Boldy shot at the end of the second period while he was standing near the Sharks net.
This season, Rutta, playing mainly in the role of third pair, has eight points in 51 games, with an average of 17 minutes in time of ice.
