The Baie de San Diego will lose an amphibious assault ship this year, but will obtain an just as muscular replacement as the navy goes through a planned rotation of huge ships which transport and deploy the Marines, says the Navy.
The specific moment of movements has not yet been released. But the USS America will leave Sasebo, in Japan, for its new house in San Diego, while its sister ships the USS Tripoli moves from San Diego to Sasebo.
It is common for the navy to change its range of ships stationed in Japan, its largest ally in Indo-Pacific.
USS America is the namesake of a class of amphibious assault ships which transport helicopters and jets with the navies. 844 feet ships are often called “mini-porters”. America currently operates in the Philippine Sea, according to the US Naval Institute’s ship Tracker. Tripoli operated off San Diego.
Transporter update: USNI also reports that the transporter of San Diego, USS Carl Vinson, operates in the Western Pacific, accompanied by several surface ships, including the cruiser based in San Diego Usson, the destructive USS Sterett, which is also based here, And local two helicopter squadrons.
Have you served in a naval cruiser? The Union-Tribune does research on a history on naval cruisers, a type of ship that is deleted by existence after more than 140 years of service. There are only three left in San Diego, USS Princeton, USS Chosin and USS Lake Erie. We would like to talk to readers who have been used in cruisers over the years.
