San Diego sailors, Marines lead training with India’s Navy

San Diego County-based amphibious navy and maritime forces are conducting a major training exercise this week with India, one of America’s most important partners in the Indo-Pacific region.

The Navy on Tuesday released photos of the amphibious transport dock USS Somerset sailing with Indian ships in the Indian Ocean as part of Tiger TRIUMPH, an exercise focused on humanitarian assistance and disaster relief. The exercise also aims to improve the two countries’ ability to work together to confront potential threats from China.

The Somerset is transporting elements of the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit from Camp Pendleton. The MEU typically deploys with around 2,200 personnel.

The destroyer USS Halsey, another warship based in San Diego, is also participating in the exercise.

Other local naval and maritime forces are preparing to depart for the Philippines to participate in Balikatan, an annual series of war games to be held in April and May in collaboration with Philippine forces. France will also participate this year.
