A man from San Diego is accused of having killed his cell companion about a month after the two were linked to a murder of prison in California State prison in Sacramento, officials told.
Tyler Yates, 30, would have stabbed Jake Kennedy, 32, in their cell around 6:15 a.m. Friday, officials of the state correctional services said. Yates was selected and the officers began to make safeguard measures on his cell companion.
Kennedy was taken to the prison triage unit, where he died around 7 a.m., investigators announced. An improvised weapon was found in the cell.
No other injury has been reported.
The two men had already been accused of having used improvised weapons to kill Jonathan Rude, 39, in the main courtyard of prison on February 22.
Kennedy and Yates had been placed in a limited accommodation after the death of Rude. Correctional services agents said they will keep Yates in the higher security area during their incident investigation.
No other information was immediately available.
It was the third accusation against Yates that he killed someone in prison.
Yates arrived at the prison in October 2017 of the County of San Diego to serve eight years for burglary and assault with force likely to produce large bodily injuries as a second striker. In February of last year, he was sentenced to life prison without the possibility of parole for first degree murder as the second striker, an offense in prison.
Kennedy was recently received from the County of San Bernardino in February 2020 to serve six years for transporting a dirk or a stab hidden as the second striker. Three years later, he was sentenced to assault as a second striker.
