Samsung is working on Galaxy AI phones that could be radically different

Samsung unveiled its first AI-powered Galaxy smartphones, the Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24+, and Galaxy S24 Ultra, earlier this year. The Galaxy’s AI features were later rolled out to some older premium phones. Now, the company’s boss says Samsung is working on AI-powered phones that could be radically different from regular smartphones.

Talk to Australian Financial Review (via GSMArena), Samsung’s MX director TM Roh said that the company’s upcoming AI-driven phones “could turn out to be radically different from existing Samsung phones. He also revealed that the lion’s share of the company’s research and development is now focused on AI-powered smartphones.

While TM Roh didn’t reveal exactly what might be different in the upcoming phones, he did say that the devices could be more “mobile.“It’s possible that the rectangular form factor won’t be necessary in the future. Phones could have larger, foldable screens and more sensors. In addition to phones and tablets, Samsung has been integrating some Galaxy AI features into its wearables, including smartwatches and wireless earbuds. So it’s possible that we won’t need large-screen phones in the future, as accessories could help us with much of the work.”

We’ve seen devices with radically different AI before, like the Humane AI Pin and the Rabbit R1, but none have been successful. It remains to be seen whether Samsung can bring something revolutionary to this segment.

Samsung has already revealed that it will launch an improved version of Bixby later this year. It will be powered by a wide language model (LLM) and could be better equipped to understand voice commands and natural language questions. It could be unveiled alongside One UI 7.0 for smartphones and tablets.
