Samsung could make the Galaxy Z Fold 7 as thin as the Galaxy S24 Ultra

While the Galaxy Z Fold 6 isn’t as thin as most of its Chinese competitors, Samsung is reportedly working to make its upcoming Galaxy Z Fold series phones as thin as its Galaxy S series slab-type phones. If the new report is true, the South Korean firm is listening to customers but might need more time.

Galaxy Z Fold 7 could be thinner than 10mm

A new report from KED Global claims that Samsung’s mobile division chief has asked the company’s engineers to make the Galaxy Z Flip and Galaxy Z Fold phones thinner. In fact, he wants them to develop an ultra-thin foldable smartphone that is as thin as the Galaxy S series phones.

Samsung could make the Galaxy Z Fold 7 as thin as the Galaxy S24 Ultra

The latest Galaxy S series phone, the Galaxy S24 Ultra, measures 8.4mm thick, while the Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24+ measure 7.6mm and 7.7mm thick, respectively. So if Samsung can pull it off, the Galaxy Z Flip 7 and Galaxy Z Fold 7 could be almost as thin as 8.4mm.

The report also claims that Samsung will unveil the Galaxy Z Fold 6 Slim (or Galaxy Z Fold 6 Ultra) by the end of the year. It will be 10mm thin and feature an 8-inch display. If the reports are accurate, Samsung’s upcoming book-style foldable phone will match its Chinese rivals. Future models in the lineup are said to be even thinner.

The Galaxy Z Fold 6, announced last week in Paris, measures 12.1 mm thick. Discover its design in our video below.

Samsung’s first foldable phone, the Galaxy Fold, was 17.1mm thick. Since then, Samsung has been working to make foldable phones thinner, lighter, and more durable. The Galaxy Z Fold 3 was the world’s first foldable phone to achieve an IPX8 rating. The Galaxy Z Flip 6 and Galaxy Z Fold 6 are the world’s first foldable phones to achieve an IP48 rating.

It would be a big improvement if Samsung could offer dust and water resistance ratings on its future foldable phones. Another concern about foldable phones is the durability of their foldable screen, which could develop cracks at the hinge.
