“If you are planning our growth forward, very soon billions of people a day will speak to Chatgpt,” said the CEO of Openai during a dinner with journalists in San Francisco. “Chatgpt will have more conversations, perhaps, than all the human words together, at some point. I think it is unreasonable to expect a unique model person or style to work for all this.”
The remarks followed the chaotic launch of a long-awaited new flagship model, GPT-5, which, according to some users, had a less friendly and favorable personality. As part of the launch, Openai has ceased to offer users access to the previous model, GPT-4O. He quickly reversed his position after some users rebelled.
Chatgpt was released in November 2022 with little fanfare but quickly became the technological product for the fastest growth in history. The chatbot’s remarkable capacity to imitate human communication and problem solving have triggered the hope of finally building machines as intelligent as humans.
But Altman said that the company had distressed the latest version by not realizing how the model’s change in tone would affect consumers. He noted that more personalization will arrive at Chatgpt in the near future.
“There should be a very different type of product to accommodate the extremely wide widely wide diversity of use cases and people,” he said.
When asked if the AI is in a bubble, Altman said “for sure”, but added that it barely means that the underlying technology will not be transforming. “When bubbles occur, intelligent people are excited about a core of truth,” he said. “If you look at most of the bubbles in history (like) the technological bubble, there was a real thing. The technology was really important, the Internet was really important.”
