Sam Altman’s friendship objectives for his child do not include AI.
The CEO of Openai was questioned during a testimony from the Senate on Thursday if he wanted his child to form a link best friend with an AI bot.
“I don’t,” replied Altman.
The question, Senator Bernie Moreno, occurred during a broader discussion on how to protect children from the damage to the AI era while people trust them with more personal information.
“These AI systems will get to know you during your life so well – which presents a new challenge and a new level of importance for the way we think of privacy in the world of AI,” said Altman, who became a father in February.
Altman said that people were already forging deeply personal relationships with AI.
“This is a more recent thing in recent months, and I don’t think everything is bad,” he said. “But I think we have to understand it and look at it very carefully.”
Altman said that there should be greater flexibility for adults using AI tools, while children should have “a much higher level of protection”.
But, as with other online services, it can be difficult to be certain of the era of users.
“If we could trace a line and if we knew with certainty when a user was a child or an adult, we would authorize adults to be much more permissive and we would have more strict rules for children,” added Altman.
Altman has already talked about what a child means to raise the AI era.
“My child will never grow up being smarter than AI,” he said during a January episode of the Podcast Re: Thinking with Adam Grant. “Children in the future will only know one world with AI.”
Last month, Altman said Openai was no longer his most proud realization after his son, who was born prematurely, had learned to eat alone.
Altman said on Thursday that his son “is fine”, adding that it is “the most astonishing thing of all time”.
