The New Orleans have chosen their potential franchise quarter in the second round of the NFL draft.
And it was not SheDer Sanders.
The saints bypassed Sanders for the second time in as many nights on Friday, selecting Tyler Shough from Louisville with the 40th choice in total.
Shough could replace Derek Carr, whose future with the saints is uncertain. New Orleans had the ninth choice in the first round of Thursday, but transmitted the available quarters – including Sanders – to select the offensive line player Kelvin Banks Jr.
Shuch was the third quarter-Arrière chosen in this year’s draft, after Cam Ward (n ° 1) and Jaxson Dart (n ° 25), while Sanders remained available after being widely projected as a first-round choice during the sample process.
The selection of Shough means that the saints could turn to a future beyond Carr, which was signed as a free agent under the coach of the time, Dennis Allen in 2023. The future of Carr was questioned after coach Kellen Moore seemed to be not committed to him as a starter during his opening press conference in February.
Moore then supported Car in several interviews in the offseason the following month, and the saints restructured his contract which essentially linked to them Carr for at least one more season.
However, Carr was open to exploring its other options before restructuring. Carr also has a shoulder injury that was not made public before the weekend before the team report for the off-season training sessions.
Shuch, who will be 26 years old in September, is the oldest quarter of the year in this year. He played seven years of university football, starting in 2018 at Oregon, where he started seven games in the COVVI-19 shortened season in 2020.
He was then transferred to Texas Tech and started nine games in the following three seasons, lacking time due to a collarbone injury and a broken leg.
The last season of Shough took place in 2024 in Louisville, where he started 12 games and finished 62.7% of his passes for 3,915 yards and 23 affected. He ran for a touchdown and launched six interceptions. Shough played in the senior Bowl, where the saints have identified many recent draft choices, including the last two quarters they have selected.
The saints have chosen a quarter of a quarter in the last three projects, taking Spencer Rattler in the fifth round in 2024 and Jake Haener in the fourth round in 2023.
