Saints’ Ryan Ramczyk to miss season after moving to PUP replacement

METAIRIE, La. — The New Orleans Saints placed right tackle Ryan Ramczyk on the alternate/physically unable to perform list on Thursday.

The move means Ramczyk will miss the entire season as he is a veteran and was placed on injured reserve/PUP ahead of final roster cuts.

Ramczyk has stayed away from Saints headquarters throughout the offseason as he rehabs from surgery last winter that was meant to alleviate a knee injury that had lingered for more than a year, limiting his practice time during game weeks.

Saints coach Dennis Allen said during offseason workouts that it was uncertain whether Ramczyk would be available for the opening practice of training camp on July 24 in Irvine, Calif. Ramczyk, a 2019 AP All-Pro, has been a starter since his rookie season in 2017.

The roster move, one of several the Saints made Thursday, also means New Orleans will open the regular season with new starters at each offensive tackle position and at one guard spot.

The Saints also placed tight end Juwan Johnson, defensive end Tanoh Kpassagnon, linebacker Nephi Sewell and defensive end Chase Young on the active/PUP list. They could return at any time during the preseason.

Meanwhile, wide receiver Chris Olave was placed on non-football injured reserve. He could also return at any time.

New Orleans has removed rookie wide receiver Bub Means from the non-football injured reserve list.

New Orleans’ two 2023 offensive line starters who remain on the active roster are center Erik McCoy and guard Cesar Ruiz. Rookie Taliese Fuaga, a first-round draft pick out of Oregon State, took first-team snaps at left tackle during offseason workouts. Trevor Penning — a 2022 first-round draft pick who was injured for most of his rookie season and lost his starting left tackle job after five games last season — took first-team snaps at right tackle.

At left guard, the Saints gave first-team snaps to 2023 fourth-round pick Nick Saldiveri, but he’ll face competition from recently acquired veterans including Oli Udoh, Shane Lemieux and Lucas Patrick.

The Saints will spend their first three weeks of training camp in Southern California before returning to their suburban New Orleans headquarters after a preseason game in San Francisco on Aug. 18.
