The sailors rejoiced last year when the chief of naval operations of the time, Lisa Franchetti, announced that they could finally put their hands in their pockets in uniform. But these days could be over.
The acting chief of naval operations, the administrator James W. Kilby, told journalists on Monday that an examination of the Ministry of Defense in the standards in uniform and grooming would understand if the sailors should always be allowed to put their hands in their pockets during their uniform.
“I have not changed this policy, but I know that we are looking for – because of the Ministry of Defense – all our grooming standards are being examined – all the changes we have made since 2015,” Kilby said at the Navy League Sea Conference. “So, for me, that’s all on the table. We want a professional force, we want to be ready and we will follow the administration management. ”
The Pentagon scale review, launched by the Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth, last month, orders each service to review the modifications made to physical form, body composition and grooming standards over the past 10 years. The examination should examine closely the derogations and the exceptions to the standards granted for facial hair, among other subjects.
The naval grooming standards fall under uniform service regulations, which could explain why the changes to uniform policy would also be the examination of standards, which is led by the defense subsecretary for staff and preparation.
“The high standards are what made the US army the greatest combat force on the planet,” wrote Hegseth in a memo on March 12. “The strength of our soldiers is our unity and our common goal. We have become stronger and more disciplined with high standards, without compromise and clear. ”
The service note was published about two months after the Air Force announced that it would perform more training and uniform inspections and examination of policies and standards that examine “derogations and exceptions”.
It should be noted that Hegseth also wrote in its March 12 memo, the review of grooming standards “understands, but without limiting the beard”.
Beards have long been a controversial problem for the row and the file. US military officials have long argued that face hair prevents troops from having a perfect seal on gas and oxygen masks. The Marine Corps also recently demanded that all the navies with medical exemptions to shave should be reassessed by a health professional.
When asked on Monday if there was more information available to find out if sailors could wear beards, Kilby replied: “I have no update for you.”
