Safe at Home Act Goes into Effect July 1. Here’s How It Affects Renters – WSB-TV Channel 2

GEORGIA — Dozens of new laws in Georgia are set to go into effect July 1, including the new Safe at Home Act. The new law aims to protect renters from uninhabitable living conditions.

It comes like News on channel 2 has been covering neglected tenants and properties for several years. Tenants who have been faced with recurring problems with mold, water and even plumbing.

Last March, Channel 2 I spoke to a mother who said her son was hospitalized with multiple types of mold in his system after living in a Dekalb County apartment complex.

This new law will now hold landlords accountable, requiring landlords to provide housing that does not pose health and safety issues.

Georgia is one of the last states to pass a law establishing minimum habitability standards.

The law applies to all new leases and lease renewals. It also limits the number of rent payments required in advance. A landlord cannot charge more than two months’ rent at the start of a rental contract.
