Safe at Home Act Goes into Effect July 1. Here’s How It Affects Renters – WSB-TV Channel 2

GEORGIA — Dozens of new laws in Georgia are set to go into effect July 1, including the state’s new Safe Homes Act. The new state law aims to protect renters from uninhabitable living conditions.

It comes as Channel 2 News covers tenants and properties that have been neglected for several years. Tenants who have been faced with ongoing problems with mold, water and even plumbing.

Last March, Channel 2 I spoke to a mother who said her son was hospitalized with several types of mold in his system after living in a Dekalb County apartment complex.

This new law will now require landlords to provide housing that does not pose health and safety concerns.

Georgia is one of the last states to pass a law establishing minimum habitability standards.

The law applies to all new leases and lease renewals. It also limits the number of rent payments required in advance. A landlord cannot charge more than two months’ rent at the start of a rental contract.
