S. Korea’s anti-corruption agency asks police to arrest Yoon

SEOUL, South Korea — South Korea’s anti-corruption agency has asked police to take over efforts to arrest impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol after its investigators failed to arrest him at the following an hours-long clash with presidential security services last week.

The agency and police confirmed the discussion Monday, hours before Yoon’s one-week arrest warrant expired. The Senior Officials Corruption Investigation Bureau will likely seek a new arrest warrant to extend Yoon’s detention period, according to police.

The Seoul Western District Court issued an arrest warrant for Yoon on Dec. 31 after he evaded several requests to appear for questioning by investigators.

The anti-corruption agency, which is conducting a joint investigation with police and military investigators, is weighing rebellion charges after the conservative president, apparently frustrated that his policies are being blocked by a legislature dominated by the liberal opposition, said martial law on December 3. and sent troops to surround the National Assembly.
