The Ukrainian armed forces launched a “counterattack” in the Kursk region, the Russian Defense Ministry reported on January 5. According to the latter, the artillery and aviation of the Northern troop grouping defeated a Ukrainian “assault group”.
Russian troops repelled a counterattack by the Ukrainian Armed Forces (FAU) during an offensive in the Kursk region, the Russian Defense Ministry said in a daily report on January 5.
“Around 9:00 Moscow time, in order to stop the offensive of Russian troops in the Kursk direction, the enemy launched a counterattack by an assault group near Berdine. The artillery and aviation of the Northern troop grouping defeated the assault group of the Ukrainian armed forces,” the ministry announced.
“Two tanks, an engineering clearance vehicle and seven armored vehicles were destroyed,” the statement said. In addition, “the operation to destroy FAU formations continues.”
“The situation is close to resolution”
Berdine’s farm is located about 80km southwest of Kursk, 10km from the district center, more precisely from the village of Bolshoye Soldatskoye.
The FAU launched an offensive in Russia’s Kursk region on August 6, and fighting there continues. On December 16, the weekly The Economist depicted a Ukrainian army on the defensive, facing Russian troops with a “huge advantage” in terms of personnel and military equipment.
In mid-December, Valery Gerasimov, chief of staff of the Russian armed forces, declared that the FAU offensive in the Kursk region had been stopped. A few days earlier, the Kremlin had declared that the situation in this Russian region was “close to resolution”.
